Driving in the UK with a Russian licence

A valid Russian driving licence (водительское удостоверение) may let you drive in the UK, but the time limit and exchange route depend on whether you are visiting or living here. Motor insurance is separate: the insurer must accept your licence and the particular car before you drive.

Driving in the UK with a Russian licence

What are the UK rules for a Russian licence?

Russia is not on the GB designated-country exchange list. Great Britain and Northern Ireland administer driving licences separately, so always use the official checker for the part of the UK where you live.

  • Licence group: non-designated non-EEA.
  • Visitors: use the GOV.UK checker with your country, residency and vehicle type; your licence must remain full and valid.
  • A new Great Britain resident can normally drive a small vehicle for up to 12 months on a valid foreign licence.
  • This country is not designated for Great Britain exchange. After the permitted driving period, you normally need a GB provisional licence and must pass the relevant tests.

Temporary car insurance with a Russian licence

Legal recognition of a Russian licence does not guarantee an insurance offer. Insurers may check age, driving experience, UK residency, claims, convictions, vehicle and intended use. Enter the licence type accurately when requesting a price.

Bluebird Insurance is not an insurer, broker or agent. We prepare your details and pass them to third-party insurers, who decide whether to offer cover. Each insurer sets its own foreign-licence and UK-residency criteria.
