How much does temporary car insurance cost?
Honest numbers, the factors behind them, and the point at which annual cover becomes the better buy.
By duration
Hourly cover starts around £9.72, a day from £17.45, a week from £52.30 and 28 days from £128.90. Those are starting prices for a favourable risk; your own quote may be higher.
Against a named driver
Adding a named driver to an annual policy often costs £25 to £60 in administration fees before any change in premium, and exposes the policyholder's no-claims discount. For anything under a couple of weeks, temporary cover is usually both cheaper and safer for the owner.
When to buy annual instead
If you expect to drive the same vehicle for more than roughly six to eight weeks in a year, an annual policy generally wins on cost and starts building a no-claims discount. We would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong product.
