Driving in the UK with a German licence

A valid German driving licence (Führerschein) may let you drive in the UK, but the time limit and exchange route depend on whether you are visiting or living here. Motor insurance is separate: the insurer must accept your licence and the particular car before you drive.

Driving in the UK with a German licence

What are the UK rules for a German licence?

Germany is an EU member and German licences follow the EU model. Great Britain and Northern Ireland administer driving licences separately, so always use the official checker for the part of the UK where you live.

  • Licence group: EU.
  • Visitors: use the GOV.UK checker with your country, residency and vehicle type; your licence must remain full and valid.
  • For ordinary car and motorcycle entitlements in Great Britain, residents can normally drive until age 70 or for 3 years after becoming resident, whichever is later.
  • A valid licence in this group can normally be exchanged for a Great Britain licence without a driving test.

Temporary car insurance with a German licence

Legal recognition of a German licence does not guarantee an insurance offer. Insurers may check age, driving experience, UK residency, claims, convictions, vehicle and intended use. Enter the licence type accurately when requesting a price.

Bluebird Insurance is not an insurer, broker or agent. We prepare your details and pass them to third-party insurers, who decide whether to offer cover. Each insurer sets its own foreign-licence and UK-residency criteria.

Do I need to exchange my German licence?

For ordinary car and motorcycle entitlements in Great Britain, residents can normally drive until age 70 or for 3 years after becoming resident, whichever is later.

A valid licence in this group can normally be exchanged for a Great Britain licence without a driving test.

Exchange rules for lorry, bus and motorcycle entitlements can differ from ordinary car entitlement. Use the official exchange service for a decision based on your details.
